Picnic and contemplate the flowers like the Japanese

Come celebrate spring Japanese-style with a picnic under the flowering trees. The ancient tradition of o-hanami—contemplating (mi) the blossoms (hana)—is still alive and well and immensely popular in Japan.

The activity takes place in the Japanese Garden during crabapple blossom season, evoking the atmosphere of Japanese cherry blossom celebration. Various activities and cultural presentations are planned for your enjoyment as well.

  • Picnicking is not normally allowed in the Japanese Garden. This day is an exception, as long as you have reserved a lunchbox for the event.
  • Reservations can be made starting April 13, 2026 on the Montreal Japanese Garden and Pavilion Foundation website. Places are limited to ensure the comfort and enjoyment of participants.
  • Note: The cost of the lunchbox does not include admission to the Jardin botanique.
  • Don’t forget to bring a blanket.
(Please don’t bring chairs as they can damage the lawn.)
