Check out the anniversary programming marking the 25th anniversary of the First Nations Garden. Created in 2001, this space at Montréal’s Jardin botanique is both deeply symbolic and vibrantly alive. It pays tribute to the knowledge, cultures and relationships with the land of Indigenous Peoples. Mark your calendar with these activities May 5 | Red Dress Day: Some red dresses will be hung in a tree at the entrance to the Cultural Garden. This installation raises awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. June 21 | National Indigenous Peoples Day: Artisan market, bannock tastings, dance and a performance by Boysak, a group of traditional singers from several communities. July 4 | Atanukan, which means “legend” in Innu, is a theatre production highlighting Indigenous voices. August 9 | International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples: Screening of a documentary on the challenges of preserving biodiversity and ancestral knowledge in Peru, followed by a discussion with Ingrid Hall, Professor of Environmental Anthropology from the Université de Montréal and Peruvian guests. This day recognizes the rights of Indigenous Peoples and promotes respect for their cultural heritage and their traditions.
