DESCRIPTION:Titre: ''Single crystals and bespoke texturesin self-assembled
  soft materials''
\n
\nEndroit : Pavillon Roger-Gaudry\, salle S-142
\n

\nHeure : 11:00 AM
\n
\nHôte : Professeur Chinedum Osuji
\n
\nRés
umé : “Controlling structure and thereby manipulating the usepropertie
s of condensed matter is a central concern in materialsscience. A striking
disparity exists in our ability to enact suchstructural control in self-a
ssembled soft materials\, relative to hardcondensed matter systems. In thi
s talk we examine strategies fordirecting self-assembly in nanostructured
soft materials to createsingle crystals and bespoke textures. Our work elu
cidates physicalprocesses that are relevant for such directed self-assembl
y\, inpart by leveraging in situ scattering tools\, with an overall goal o
fexploiting fundamental understanding to create useful materialsor devices
. In particular\, we consider the use of magnetic fields andconfinement ef
fects for directed self-assembly of soft mesophasesof block copolymers and
discotic liquid crystals. The ability toproduce highly ordered functional
materials over macroscopiclength scales is demonstrated. We explore the r
ole of alignmentand connectivity in creating materials with highly anisotr
opic iontransport\, and in creating highly selective nanofiltration membra
neswith uniformly aligned nanopores produced by molecular selfassembly.App
lication of orthogonal fields\, and field processingacross sequential phas
e transitions enables a novel realization ofmacroscopic single crystals of
self-assembled mesophases withprecisely specified texture. Recent progres
s on low field (sub-1 T)alignment and the associated potential to develop
bespoke texturesin block copolymers using local field screening are presen
 ted.”
\n
\n
\nSelected references
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n'Chinedum Osuji Bi
