SUMMARY:Teaching Physical Education as though the future depends on it
DESCRIPTION:Conférence de Alan Ovens. University of Auckland\, New Zealand

\n Résumé de la conférence ( conférence donnée en anglais)
\nAs Phy
sical Education teachers in the 21st century\, we live in critical times.
Our world faces serious global issues of environmental health\, ethnic con
flict\, social inequality\, and over-exploitation of natural resources. Wh
at is our responsibility as physical educators in a world of war\, poverty
\, prejudice\, and pollution? In this presentation I argue that more than
ever the future demands that our youngpeople develop a self-awareness and
compassion to reduce their impact on the world and protect the health of t
heir communities and environments. Thiswill require them to have an ethic
of care for our communities be well-informed and engaged\, embrace physica
l activity as a core part of living\, have alove of play\, be well-educate
d in ethics and civics\, and to have the social and emotional ability to u
nderstand and work with people from diversecultures. To achieve this\, I s
uggest some principles that underpin a transformative pedagogy for physica
l education that I hope provides both a means for rethinking Physical Educ
ation and for provoking discussion about the subject and its link to the f
uture lives and needs of young people.
\n
\nAlan Ovens is a Principal Le
cturer in Physical Education in the School of Curriculum and Pedagogy\, Fa
culty of Education and Social Work. He has held a range of roles within th
e faculty\, including Deputy Head of the School of Critical Studies in Edu
cation\, Head of the Health and Physical Education Group\, and Acting Prog
ramme Leader of the Bachelor of Physical Education. He hasalso been the Pr
esident of Physical Education New Zealand (2006-2012) and is the current C
hair of the AIESEP TGfU Special Interest Group. He is the Programme Co-Cha
ir for the 2018 S-STEP Castle Conference in England. His key research inte
rests are in complexity\, teacher education pedagogy and methodologies for
  self-study research.
