SUMMARY:Circles of solidarity: exploring group antenatal care for a positiv
 e pregnancy experience in Senegal
DESCRIPTION:Séminaire scientifique organisé par l'Institut de recherche e
n santé publique de l'Université de Montréal – IRSPUM
\nTitre :Circle
s of solidarity: exploring group antenatal care for a positive pregnancy e
 xperience in Senegal
\nRésuméAntenatal care (ANC) is essential to screen
and treat pregnancy-related complications and identify high-risk pregnanc
ies. It is also an opportunity to communicate and provide support to women
and families regarding appropriate care seeking practices and health beha
viors during pregnancy and across the continuum of care. However\, in Sene
gal\, only around half of all pregnant women and adolescents receive the r
ecommended minimum of four ANC visits and even fewer receive high-quality
services that meet their needs. Group ANC—a model where health care prov
iders bring together a group of women at the same stage of pregnancy for p
hysical assessment\, facilitated participatory learning and peer support
—has demonstrated potential for improving women’s pregnancy experience
s and health outcomes. This presentation will discuss the implementation a
nd preliminary findings of an ongoing pilot study of group ANC in Senegal
 ’s Kaolack Region.
\nConférencière :Britt McKinnon is a Senior Researc
h Associate with the Centre for Global Child Health at the Hospital for Si
ck Children in Toronto and an Assistant Professor in the Division of Epide
miology at University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health. S

al fellow at McGill’s Institute for Health and Social Policy. Her resear
ch interests are in maternal and child health\, social epidemiology\, and
