'' Catalysts for Water Oxidation\,CH Hydroxylation and AlcoholDehydrogenat
 ion.Bob Crabtree (Yale Chemistry Dept.)''
\n
\nEndroit : Pavillon Roger-
 Gaudry\, salle M-415
\n
\nHeure : 11:00 AM
\n
\nHôte : Professeur An
 dré Charette
\n
\nRésumé : After a brief mention of our original hyd
rogenation catalyst from the 1970s\, we move on to recent work in the titl
e areas. A number of organoiridium-based catalyst precursors prove highly
active for water oxidation driven either by electrolysis or by chemical ox
idants. The active resting state species is found to be a coordination com
plex with a Ir(IV)—O—Ir(IV) core. This material binds irreversibly to
oxide surfaces with full retention of catalytic activity. The same catalys
t\, applied to alkane oxidation\, produces hydroxylation with retention of
configuration at carbon\, consistent with an oxene-like insertion mechani
sm. Related catalysts that bring about alcohol dehydrogenation have been a
pplied to conversion of the biodiesel residue\, glycerol\, to lactic acid.
