 ge Mill’s well-celebrated claim that all there is to names is their bear
 ers\, viz. that names denote but don’t connote. I’ll defend the view t
 hat there is more to names and that\, curiously enough\, Mill himself hint
 ed at that. Although I’ll have close to nothing to say about the way nam
 es relate to their bearers\, I’ll end up arguing that names denote and c
 onnote. I’ll argue that on top of being tools of direct reference (being
  tags)\, names play an important cognitive role in helping to organize our
  mental and social life.
