SUMMARY:Tuning Molecular Recognition in DNA Materials
DESCRIPTION:Titre :Tuning Molecular Recognition in DNA Materials: Towards S
 elf-Replicating Systems and Smarter Particules
\nEndroit : Pavillon Roger-
 Gaudry\, Salle N-615Hôte : Jean-François Masson
\nCette conférence ser
a prononcée (en anglais) par la professeur Julianne Gibbs de l'Universi
 té de l'Alberta.
\nRésuméOur group is interested in understanding how c
onfinement influences molecular recognition in materials systems and how w
e can use its unique influence to achieve new material properties. In one
example\, we have developed a DNA system that can self-replicate isotherma
lly by balancing repulsive and attractive interactions during DNA recognit
ion. This strategy of amplification by destabilization has great potential
in DNA diagnostics and infectious disease detection as it utilizes very s
imple DNA modifications and can be performed at virtually any temperature.
In another example\, we have shown that using molecular recognition we ca
n control the composition and behavior in DNA nanomaterials that are poten
tial candidates for targeted drug delivery.  By exploring the unique mole
cular recognition properties of these same materials\, we have also uncove
red a strategy for rapid colorimetric detection of DNA suitable for point-
of-care diagnostics.  Finally\, I will discuss how confinement at planar
silica surfaces most relevant to microarray technologies influences DNA re
cognition using surface specific spectroscopy. We find that confinement at
the silica interface greatly reduces the stability of DNA duplexes in com
parison with other common substrates like gold\, which has direct implicat
ions for biodiagnostics using DNA immobilized on glass.
\nInformations sup
