SUMMARY:One-way motion electrons in a superhighway - Madhab Neupane ( Unive
 rsity of Central Florida)
DESCRIPTION:Evolution of the modern world is highly correlated with technol
ogical development especially in electronics. However\, current issues as
the undesired heat generation due to the random motion of electrons has li
mited our progress\, hampering our ability to achieve maximum efficiency i
n our electronic devices. A solution to such problem arises in condensed m
atter physics through the discovery of new class of materials known as top
ological insulators. This unconventional class of materials does not allow
electrical flow in its bulk interior but possesses a one-way highway-like
conduction channel – superhighway – in its boundary. These superhighw
ay conduction channels behave as massless Dirac fermions. In this talk\, I
will discuss the experimental realization of topological insulator phase
 – superhighway conduction channel – of matter in real materials throug
h photoemission techniques. The unusual properties of the protected topolo
gical surface states can lead to future applications in spintronics and qu
 antum computation.
\nLa conférence est pour tout public et le café est
 servi dès 11h30.
