SUMMARY:Extracting Magnetic Energy in the Plasma Universe – Space and Lab
oratory Connections - Richard Sydora (University of Alberta)
DESCRIPTION:Magnetic reconnection is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the Univers
e\, explosively releasing magnetic field energy into plasma kinetic energy
 .
\nWhile it occurs in a spatially localized region\, the process changes
the global field line topology and causes large-scale plasma convection\,
playing a crucial role in dynamical phenomena such as magnetospheric subst
orms\, stellar flares\, and other astrophysical environments. It has been
a long-standing issue how the explosive magnetic dissipation is generated
in collisionless plasmas where the frictional effect due to the binary col
lision is negligibly small. Laboratory plasma experiments have been design
ed to investigate magnetic reconnection processes and have given us insigh
t into how collective effects such as plasma waves play a role. I will giv
e an overview of recent advances in the theory and experiments/observation
s of magnetic reconnection in various plasma environments and open questio
 ns that remain.
\nLa conférence est pour tout public et le café est serv
 i dès 11h30.
