 Résumé : Methods for the synthesis of discrete oligogermanes having ger
 manium – germanium single bonds has\, until recently\, been complicated 
 by the formation of complex mixtures of products and/or low yields\, and t
 his has precluded a detailed survey of the structure/property relationship
 s in these systems. We have developed a method for the rational synthesis
  of these compounds that employs the hydrogermolysis reaction between a ge
 rmanium amide and a germanium hydride\, either alone or in conjunction wit
 h a hydride protection/deprotection strategy.  Using this method\, we hav
 e obtained a library of oligogermanium compounds having a variety of chain
  lengths and substituent patterns\, and both linear and branched systems h
 ave been prepared. We wish to report our recent findings in this area\, a
 nd will discuss the preparation of a series of para-tolyl substituted line
 ar systems as well as several new rare branched compounds having hydride o
 r halide substituents.  Both types of oligogermanes have been characteriz
 ed by UV/visible spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry\, and we have correla
 ted their spectral and electrochemical data with their structures.     Inf
