\nRésumé :Infrared and Ra
 man spectroscopy is the most generally applicable of all characterization 
 tools for quantitative and qualitative analysis. Its breadth of applicatio
 n is remarkable\, covering gases\, liquids\, crystalline and amorphous sol
 ids\, solid-state defects\, surface structures\, and surface-adsorbed spec
 ies. Recent developments in instrumentation allow spectra to be obtained u
 nder difficult conditions of low sample transmission\, low concentration a
 nd rapid spectral change. The latest advances in IR spectroscopy for the s
 urface science applications and fast reaction monitoring will be reviewed 
 in this presentation. The following topics will be discussed in details:
