SUMMARY:Using pulsars in a Galactic-scale gravitational-wave detector - Rob
 ert Ferdman (McGill University)
DESCRIPTION:Using pulsars in a Galactic-scale gravitational-wave detector -
  Robert Ferdman (McGill University)
\n
\nAt the forefront of observation
astrophysics is the effort to directly
\ndetect gravitational waves (GWs)
\, which remains a 'holy grail' in
\nvalidating Einstein's general theory
 of relativity.   This is an
\ninternational undertaking\, involving many
  experiments by several large
\ncollaborations.  In this talk\, I will fo
cus on the effort of the North
\nAmerican Nanohertz Observatory for Gravit
 ational Waves (NANOGrav)
\ncollaboration\, which uses the distances betwee
 n Earth and several
\nmillisecond-period pulsars as arms of a Galactic-sca
 le GW detector. This
\n'Pulsar Timing Array' is sensitive to the nanohertz
  frequency region of
\nthe GW spectrum\, and is the only current method fo
 r studying GW emission
\nfrom supermassive black hole pairs. It is therefo
 re complementary to the
\nlarger frequency ranges probed by ground-based d
 etectors\, which will be
\nsensitive to sources such as merging neutron-st
 ar pairs.
\n
\nI will discuss how we will be able to detect GWs with pul
 sar timing\, and
\ndescribe recent progress.  I will also briefly describ
 e ongoing and future
\ninstrumentation and other observational considerati
 ons that will greatly
\nbenefit this work.
