SUMMARY:Probing the Hubble Sequence through Numerical Simulations - Paul To
 rrey (MIT Kavli Institute)
DESCRIPTION:Probing the Hubble Sequence through Numerical Simulations
\nPau
 l Torrey (MIT Kavli Institute)
\nIn astrophysics\, numerical simulations a
re among the most powerful tools  available to probe the non-linear regim
e of cosmic structure formation. They also provide one of the most powerf
ul test-beds for understanding the  impact that hydrodynamics and physica
l feedback processes have on the  evolution of galaxies.  In my talk\, I
will present galaxy formation  simulations that couple a novel moving me
sh hydrodynamical approach with  explicit baryon feedback prescriptions.
This results in galaxy formation  models that reproduce a wide range of
observable constrains including the  galaxy stellar mass function\, cosm
ic star formation rate\, and galaxy  morphological diversity.  I will di
scuss the numerical methods that we¹ve  employed\, how they vary from tr
aditional methods\, why this matters for our  understanding of galaxy for
mation\, and what we have learned from these  large numerical experiments
 .
\nCette conférence s'adresse à tous\, y compris les professeurs\, le
s chercheurs et les étudiants des trois cycles. Le café est servi à par
 tir de 11h30.
