DESCRIPTION:Titre : Photocatalysis with Visible Light.Endroit : Pavillon J.
 -A.-Bombardier\, salle 1035 à 11 hHôte : Professeur Shawn CollinsLa conf
érence sera prononcée (en anglais) par le professeur Tehshik Yoon\, du d
épartement de chimie de l'University of Wisconsin-Madison.Résumé : Ligh
t can be considered a clean\, renewable\, and inexpensive “reagent” fo
r chemical synthesis.  Nevertheless\, most conventional methods for the p
hotochemical synthesis of organic compounds requires the use of specialize
d photochemical equipment that is capable of generating high energy ultrav
iolet light and containing it safely.  This is a practical impediment tha
t has prevented the wide adoption of photochemical synthesis in the fine c
hemicals industry.  We have developed a strategy that exploits the reacti
vity of transition metal photocatalysts in order to perform a variety of s
ynthetically useful cycloaddition reactions using visible wavelengths of l
ight.  By enabling the use of direct sunlight rather than high energy art
ificial UV light\, we hope to establish a new\, environmentally responsibl
e approach to synthetic organic photochemistry. Information supplémentai
