SUMMARY:Surface magnetic fields as windows to stellar internal structure an
 d evolutionary history
DESCRIPTION:Conférence de Greg Wade\, RMC. KingstonRésumé The surface m
agnetic fields of non-degenerate stars are sensitive probes of their curre
nt internal structure and evolutionary histories. During the past decade\,
comprehensive studies of large-scale stellar surface magnetic field topol
ogies have been achieved using tomographic reconstruction based on high-re
solution spectropolarimetric time series observations. On the one hand\, t
hese investigations have revealed systematic relationships between field c
haracteristics and the evolutionary situation of cool\, low-mass stars. Th
ese relationships represent important new observational constraints impose
d on dynamo models\, and the evolution of dynamo physics through the pre-m
ain sequence to the main sequence. On the other hand\, the characteristics
of magnetism in higher-mass stars are found be remarkably uniform\, at bo
th the pre-main sequence and main sequences phases\, over more than 1.5 de
cades in stellar mass. This fundamental result strengthens the view that t
hese fields are of fossil origin\, produced as the consequence of common e
lements of their evolutionary history predating the earliest observable pr
e-main sequence phases.Présentée par le Groupe Astronomie et astrophysiq
