SUMMARY:An organic interface for cell photo-stimulation: Towards the organi
 c artificial retina– Guglielmo Lanzani\, IIT\, Milano\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:Guglielmo Lanzani\, Center for Nano Science and Technology of I
IT & Politecnico di Milano\, ItalyThis talk introduces the use of organic
semiconductors as artificial photoreceptors in bio-mimetic devices. This r
esearch started some years ago by demonstrating that organic semiconductor
s can be used to reproduce the natural retina photoreceptor spectral respo
nse in standard photo-diodes [1]. The second step was the development of h
ybrid solid liquid photodiodes that can naturally interface with a biologi
cal environment through the electronic/ionic interface [2]. Subsequently w
e were able to demonstratethat primary neurons rom rat brains grown on top
of a photovoltaic semiconducting polymer acquire light sensitivity [3]. T
his occurs through a specific mechanism of cell stimulation by polymer pho
toexcitation (CSP) that will be discussed in the presentation. We then stu
died explanted retinas put in contact with our organic device. We will sho
w that blind retinas\, i.e. retinas with severe damage of the photorecepto
rs\, do regain light sensitivity\, as demonstrated by ganglion cell electr
ical activity upon illumination [4]. The process\, its relation to CSP\, p
erspective and future developments will be discussed. M. Antognazza  et
