SUMMARY:Topological Physics in Band Insulators – Eugene Mele\, UPenn
DESCRIPTION:Eugen Mele\, University of Pennsylvania Department of Physics &
  Astronomy / 209 South 33rd Street / Philadelphia\, PA 19104-6396Topologic
al insulators are a recently discovered quantum electronic phase of matter
. This talk will give a brief overview of the known electronic phases of m
atter\, focusing on the unique properties of topological insulators and th
eir discovery from a careful consideration of the low energy electronic ph
ysics of single-layer graphene.  Closely related ideas are then used to a
nalyze the electronic behavior of multilayer graphenes including gapped bi
layer graphene and “twisted” graphenes where topological consideration
s introduce unexpectedly rich low energy physics. Site web du groupe de
