 ion cascades will be described.  The cascades involve electrocyclic react
 ions\, cationic rearrangements\, and conjugate addition-initiated sequence
 s\, and high levels of stereochemical control are achieved.  The applicat
 ion of these cyclization methods in strategies for the synthesis of comple
