SUMMARY:The Discovery of the First Topological Kondo Insulator: The tale of
  SmB6
DESCRIPTION:Maxim Dzero\, Department of Physics\, Kent State University\, K
ent\, Ohio\, USAThe application of ideas developed in topology to the elec
tronic band structure led to an intriguing discovery: materials can conduc
t electricity at the surface while remaining insulating at the bulk. These
materials\, called topological insulators\, will have transformative impa
ct on spintronics\, low-power transport\, and quantum computing. The searc
h for a true topological insulator took years because even best candidates
exhibited significant bulk conductivity. Only recently\, literally in the
past few months\, several experimental groups established that samarium h
exaboride\, discovered in 1969 in Bell Labs\, is a first topological insul
ator in its bulk form. In my talk\, I review the theory which paved the wa
y for this discovery. I will explain how crystalline symmetry\, electron-e
lectron interactions\, and orbital degeneracy contribute to protecting th
e topological states in SmB6. In addition\, I will discuss the experiment
al signatures of metallic surface states. Finally\, I formulate the theore
tical principles for discovering new topological insulators with designabl
e properties.Site web du groupe du Prof. Dzero'sCette conférence est pré
