SUMMARY:Probing Extrasolar Planet Atmospheres Through Transmission Spectros
 copy - Eliza Kempton
DESCRIPTION:Eliza Kempton\, Grinnell CollegeRésumé/abstract:Much has been
learned about exoplanet atmospheres in recent years. For transiting extra
solar planets\, transmission spectroscopy -- measurements of the spectrum
of stellar light transmitted through the planetary atmosphere during trans
it -- has been a valuable tool for constraining atmospheric properties. To
date\, transmission spectroscopy has been used as a tool for constraining
atmospheric composition\, cloud structure\, hazes\, and winds in a variet
y of exoplanetary atmospheres. In this talk I will focus on recent modelin
g and observational results that have pushed the capabilities of this meth
od. The first is the use of transmission spectra to constrain the atmosphe
ric properties of the transiting super-Earth GJ 1214b. The second is the u
se of Doppler shifted transmission spectra to measure wind speeds in tidal
ly locked hot Jupiters.Ce séminaire est présenté par le groupe astronom
ie et astrophysique du Département de physique de l'Université de Montr
 éal.
