SUMMARY:The new worlds of the cosmos\, two decades of excitement and surpri
 ses - Stéphane Udry
DESCRIPTION:Stéphane Udry\, Université de GenèveRésumé/abstract:Extra-
solar planets obtain a very high scientific and public interest since the
detection 17 years ago of the reflex motion due to a Jupiter-mass object a
round the solar-type star 51 Pegasi. During the ensuing years\, we learned
that planets are common\, and that planetary formation processes may prod
uce a surprising variety of configurations: masses considerably larger tha
n Jupiter\, planets moving on highly eccentric orbits\, planets very close
to their stars\, planets in resonant multi-planet systems\, planets orbit
ing components of stellar binaries\, etc. Understanding the physical reaso
ns for such wide variations in outcome remains a central issue in planet-f
ormation theory. In this presentation I will review some of the most inter
esting results outlining the motivations and development that led to these
results\, and showing how they shape our new understanding of the formati
on and structure of planetary systems.Cette conférence s'adresse à tous\
, y compris les professeurs\, les chercheurs et les étudiants des trois c
ycles.Cette conférence est présentée par le Département de physique de
  l'Université de Montréal.
