In dimen sion 1 the inner metric (given by minimal arc-length within the variety) c arries no interesting information\, and it is only very recently\, startin g with a 2008 paper of Birbrair and Fernandes\, that it has become clear h ow rich metric information is in higher dimensions. Dimension 2 is now ver y well understood through work of Birbrair\, Pichon and the speaker. The t alk will give an overview of this work and some applications.Colloque de m athématiques de Montréal CRM - ISMOrganisateurs/OrganizersMikael Pichot (McGill)Iosif Polterovich (uMontreal) END:VEVENT BEGIN:VTIMEZONE TZID:America/Montreal X-LIC-LOCATION:America/Montreal END:VTIMEZONE END:VCALENDAR
