SUMMARY:Récits territoriaux / Territorial Narratives avec Gabriel Duarte
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Gabriel Duarte will explore the concept of ‘trans-scala
 bility’\, a mechanism that understands that the tissues connecting the a
 pparently disjointed dimensions of the urban realm constitute what one cou
 ld\, today\, claim as urbanism. He will discuss how architecture and urban
 ism today need to urgently overlay multiple activities\, including plannin
 g\, design\, advocacy\, and policy-making through the interplay among his 
 research\, practice\, and teaching. ‘Trans-scalability’ and its dynami
 c representations encompass different modes of engagement to buildings\, c
 ities\, and territories\, which range from the articulations of their phys
 ical manifestations to how they are affected by often overlooked social\, 
 ecological\, political and economic forces.
\nHis works investigate how ar
 chitecture and urbanism have the potential to become analytical and proact
 ive at the same time. From a recent critical mapping exhibition about Braz
 il in the last Venice Architecture Biennale\, to ongoing research on the i
 mpacts of the offshore industry on coastal cities and ecologies in the Ame
 ricas\; or from investigations on the pampas landscape as a territorial in
 frastructure\, to collaborative design and tactical urbanism projects in B
 razil and Africa\; Prof. Duarte’s works are rooted in relearning how to 
 see\, reframe and recalibrate the urban.
\nGabriel Duarte est directeur d
 ’urbanisme du bureau Bernardes Architecture et Professeur au Départemen
 t d’architecture et d’urbanisme à l’Université Catholique de Rio d
 e Janeiro\, où il coordonne des ateliers de projets à des échelles inte
 rmédiaires entre le territoire et l’architecture. Il a été l’un des
  fondateurs de l’agence CAMPO\, active à Rio de Janeiro de 2007 à 2017
 \, et où il a développé plusieurs projets d’urbanisme avec des métho
 dologies participatives innovantes au Brésil et en Afrique. Le professeur
  Duarte a récemment fondé le groupe de recherche Nouvelles Cartographies
 \, qui se consacre à des méthodes alternatives de cartographie collabora
 tive\, ainsi que le laboratoire Architecture\, Infrastructure et Territoir
 e. Il a donné de nombreuses conférences au Brésil et à l’étranger\,
  il a récemment été professeur invité à l'Architectural Association\,
  au MIT\, à l’Université du Michigan et à Harvard\, où il a occupé 
 la Chaire Lemman au Centre David Rockefeller d'Études Latino-Américaines
  en 2014-15. 
\nParmi les nombreux prix qu’il a reçus\, soulignons les 
 prix Wolf Tochtermann de l'UNESCO et le prix Takashi Inuye de la Fédérat
 ion Internationale pour l’Habitation et l’Aménagement. Il est membre 
 du Comité d'évaluation de la Fondation européenne de la science depuis 
 2007 et\, en 2014\, il a été nommé membre du Comité de recherche en ur
 banisme informel de la UN-Habitat à l’Université Leibniz de Hanovre\, 
 Allemagne. Il a fait ses études d'architecte et d’urbaniste à la Facul
 té d'architecture et d’urbanisme de l’Université Fédérale de Rio d
 e Janeiro\, au Brésil\, et à l'Université de technologie de Delft\, aux
  Pays-Bas.
