 ard Parkin received his B. A. (First Class)\, M. A.\, and D. Phil degrees 
 from the Queen's College\, Oxford University. Both his graduate and underg
 raduate research were carried out under the guidance of Professor Malcolm 
 L. H. Green. In 1985\, he moved to the California Institute of Technology 
 as a NATO postdoctoral fellow to work with Professor John E. Bercaw. He jo
 ined the faculty of Columbia University as Assistant Professor in 1988 and
  was promoted to Associate Professor in 1991 and to Professor in 1994. He 
 served as Chairman of the Department from 1999 – 2002. He has also serve
 d as Chair of the New York Section of the American Chemical Society\, Chai
 r of the Inorganic Chemistry and Catalytic Science Section of the New York
  Academy of Sciences\, Chair of the Organometallic Subdivision of the Amer
 ican Chemical Society Division of Inorganic Chemistry\, and Chair of the G
 ordon Research Conference in Organometallic Chemistry. His principal resea
 rch interests are in the areas of synthetic\, structural\, and mechanistic
  inorganic chemistry and he is an elected Fellow of both the Royal Society
  of Chemistry and the American Chemical Society. Among other awards\, he i
 s a recipient of the Presidential Faculty Fellowship Award\, an Alfred P. 
 Sloan Research Fellowship\, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Teacher Scholar 
 Award\, the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry\, the Americ
 an Chemical Society Award in Organometallic Chemistry\, the Royal Society 
 of Chemistry Corday Morgan Medal\, the Royal Society of Chemistry Award in
  Organometallic Chemistry\, the Royal Society of Chemistry Chem Soc Rev Le
 cture Award\, and the Columbia University Presidential Award for Outstandi
 ng Teaching. Most recently\, he received the Presidential Award for Excell
 ence in Science\, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring\, an award that wa
 s presented at a White House ceremony.
