SUMMARY:Young People\, the Internet\, and Emerging Pathways into Criminalit
y: A Study of Australian Adolescents
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker :  Russell Brewer
Dr Russell Brewer is a Senior
Lecturer at Flinders University Law School. He has a PhD in Criminology f
rom the Australian National University. His research interests include pol
icing\, crime prevention\, Internet crime\, and social networks. In partic
ular\, his work seeks to establish the significance of networks as a tool
for providing a clearer understanding of the risk factors that lead to dev
iance\, as well as the structural characteristics of policing responses to
criminality. He has a range of publications exploring these areas\, inclu
ding a series of journal articles\, as well as a monograph for the Clarend
on Series in Criminology\, Oxford University Press.
Summary
This article e
xplores the ways in which young people experience the Internet as a potent
ially criminogenic medium. To date\, little research has explored the poss
ible links between the mundane\, ubiquitous use of digital communication t
echnologies by young people and involvement in delinquency in online conte
xts. The current empirical study seeks to address this gap\, by investigat
ing how a young person’s digital pursuits (i.e. relative access\, techni
cal competencies\, and exposure to pertinent technologies\, Internet sites
and services)\, as well as various developmental considerations\, are lin
ked to delinquent online encounters – be they tentative engagements of a
naïve or non-criminal kind or deliberate\, more serious forms of technol
 ogically-mediated criminality.
Information
Conférence organisée par le
  Centre international de criminologie comparée.
