 of a novel catalytic function in proteins and peptides\, apart from its in
 herent practical value\, is important for fundamental understanding of ori
 gins of enzymatic activity. Applications of a minimalistic approach to des
 ign of artificial catalysts will be presented.  The catalytic efficiencie
 s of the designed catalysts are on par with those of the best computationa
 l approaches and\, in some cases\, rivals those of enzymes.
