SUMMARY:Studying fear of crime: from the field to the lab
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker: Carla Cardoso\, Ph.D.\, Biomedical Sciences.
Car
la Cardoso is Assistant Professor and responsible for the Laboratory of E
xperimental Criminology at the School of Criminology\, Faculty of Law\, Un
iversity of Porto. Her main research interests and publications are on exp
erimental criminology\, biosocial criminology\, fear of crime\, urban secu
 rity and crime prevention.
Summary
In this presentation\, perceptions of i
nsecurity and fear of crime are addressed using different theoretical and
 methodological approaches.
Firstly it will be presented data (N=1\,030 res
idents\, year 2008) from a survey in Porto municipality\, in which individ
 ual (e.g. gender\, age\, and employment status)\, contextual (e.g. percept
ion of social and physical disorders\; visibility and satisfaction with po
lice work) and ecological variables (social cohesion\, informal social con
trol and place attachment) were included in order to understand fear of cr
 ime.
Secondly\, it will be presented innovative laboratorial approaches (u
sing eyetracking techniques) developed to explore the role of environmenta
l elements and individuals’ attentional focus associated with (in)securi
ty perceptions. Finally\, data from a qualitative study on experiences of
fear of crime will be presented. At the end\, it will be discussed further
directions of these studies\, and new ways to dissect fear of crime and s
ubjective experiences of environment\, in particular the importance and ch
allenges in the use of mixed methodologies.
Information
Conférence prése
