SUMMARY:Emergent Dirac fermions and gauge field in condensed matter system

DESCRIPTION:Emergent Dirac fermions and gauge field in condensed matter sys
 temYin-Chen HePostdoctoral researcherPhysics DepartmentHarvard University

\nAbstract: Many-body entanglement can lead to exotic phases and phase tra
nsitions beyond conventional symmetry breaking paradigm. The prominent exa
mples are the topological ordered phase in the fractional quantum Hall and
quantum spin liquid. In this talk\, I will go beyond the relatively well
understood gapped topological order\, and focus on the exotic critical phe
nomena. Specifically I will discuss the critical theories that have emerge
nt Dirac fermions interacting with a U(1) gauge field. I will show how tho
se theories can emerge as a critical spin liquid phase on the kagome latti
ce as well as the critical points between different fractional quantum Hal
l phases. Our discoveries make a bridge between the formal field theories
with our real world and would also help to understand those theories that
 puzzle the community for decades.
\nBio: 2016.9-present: Gordon and Betty
