SUMMARY:Migrating ‘ndrangheta and the paradigms of cultural policing of m
 afia-type organised crime cross borders
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker : Anna Sergi
Anna Sergi holds a PhD in Sociology
from the University of Essex\, UK\, an LLM in Criminal Law\, Criminology a
nd Criminal Justice from King’s College\, London and a specialist law de
gree from the University of Bologna\, Italy.
As a lecturer in Criminology
at the University of Essex\, she specialises in organised crime and mafia
studies\, from different perspectives\, privileging comparative research a
pproaches in policing and criminal justice methods. She has been a visitin
g fellow in different institutions\, among which New York University\, Fli
nders University\, University of Melbourne\, and the Australian Institute
 of Criminology.
Summary
International media and popular culture have perpe
tuated the presumption that criminals of Calabrian origins around the worl
d must belong to\, and replicate the structure of\, the mafia-type Calabri
an ‘ndrangheta clans. This presumption has been largely confirmed by Ita
lian authorities and recently been considered by Australian and Canadian o
nes. However\, this importation of European policing models is in danger o
f replicating the flawed conceptualisation of organised crime as always hi
erarchical and monolithic from the USA while risking to miss the true natu
re of the Calabrian mafia phenomenon abroad.
This on-going research projec
t\, carried out in Australia and in Canada\, and drawing from previous res
earch on the topic\, reflects upon the challenges and possibilities to und
erstand the Calabrian ‘ndrangheta as a set of behaviours (‘ndranghetis
 m) that can migrate and/or root abroad also thanks to exploitation of cult
ural traits from the territory of origin with specific references to Canad
ian and Australian experiences. Law enforcement often struggles to recogni
se culture and behaviours as relevant for investigations and oppose cultur
al approaches in fear of ethnic discrimination. The very core of this refl
ection\, therefore\, is a re-definition of the concepts of cultural polici
ng\, or policing through cultural awareness\, of mafia behaviours in terri
tories different from the ones of origin.
Information
Conférence prése
