SUMMARY:All in this together? The politics of crime and race in multiracial
  neighborhoods
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker : Jan Doering
\nJan Doering is an assistant profe
ssor of sociology at McGill University. He received his PhD from the Unive
rsity of Chicago in 2014 and worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Univer
sity of Toronto. His research focuses on ethno-racial experience and polit
ics in various contexts. He is currently completing a book manuscript on t
he politics of crime in two multiracial Chicago neighborhoods.
\nSummary
\
nCrime is a sensitive issue in multiracial neighborhoods. It can unite res
idents from different backgrounds by giving them an opportunity to rally a
gainst a shared threat. However\, it can also divide them along racial lin
es. Both outcomes are plausible and do indeed occur. Whether they do so de
pends on how activists\, community organizations\, and politicians frame t
he fight against crime in racial or race-neutral terms. The presentation i
ntroduces a conceptual framework for examining such situations and discuss
es them with the help of selected findings from a 3.5 year ethnography of
 two Chicago neighborhoods.
\nInformation
\nConférence présentée par le
