\nVivek Venkatesh is Associate 
 Professor in the Department of Education at Concordia University in Montr
 éal\, Québec. He is the director of the SOMEONE - Social Media Education
  Every Day - initiative\, and the creator of the Grimposium festival and c
 onference series.
\nVivek is a filmmaker\, and an interdisciplinary\, appl
 ied learning scientist who investigates the psychological\, cultural and c
 ognitive factors impacting the design\, development and inclusive adoption
  of digital media in educational and social contexts.
\nSummaryIn this tal
 k\, Vivek Venkatesh will speak about the development of an interdisciplina
 ry research program that looks at socio-communal\, political and psycholog
 ical factors impacting the production and dissemination of hate speech in 
 the global extreme metal music scene.
\nDrawing on examples from field obs
 ervations\, interviews\, and multi-method content analyses from multiple s
 ources of data\, Vivek will describe how themes of darkness\, destruction\
 , self-harm\, xenophobia and dystopia blur consumption-related boundaries 
 between musicians\, fans\, visual artists and journalists in underground e
 xtreme metal scenes.
\nImplications for the development of social pedagogi
 cal curricula to build criticality and reflexivity in the general public t
 owards issues of discrimination\, racism\, misogyny and other forms of int
 olerance will be discussed.
