SUMMARY:Conférence de la Professeure Emilie Ringe (Rice University)
DESCRIPTION:Titre :Combining Plasmonic and Catalytic Metals for Functional
 Nanomaterials
\nEndroit : Pavillon J.-Armand Bombardier\, salle 1035 à
  14 hHôte : Jean-François Masson
\nCette conférence sera prononcée (
en anglais) par la Professeure Emilie Ringe du Department of Materials
Science and NanoEngineering de l'Université Rice.
\nRésumé:The catalyt
ic and optical properties of metal nanoparticles can be combined to create
platforms for light-driven chemical energy storage and enhanced in-situ r
eaction monitoring. However\, the heavily damped plasmon resonances of man
y catalytically active metals (e.g.\, Pt\, Pd) prevent this dual functiona
lity in pure nanostructures. The addition of catalytic metals at or close
to the surface of efficient plasmonic particles thus presents a unique opp
ortunity if the resonances can be conserved after coating.
\nHere\, electr
 on-based techniques (electron-energy loss\, cathodoluminescence\, and ener
gy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) are used to characterize bimetallic syst
 ems such as Au/Pd octopods\, Pt-decorated Au prisms\, and Pd-decorate Al n
anocrystals. We show that these plasmonic nanomaterials incorporating cata
lytically active but heavily damped metals sustain multiple size-dependent
LSPRs that are strongly localized at the particle tips or edges\, dependi
ng on the mode energy. Tomography and composition mapping unravels the ava
ilability of catalytic metal at the surface of the nanoparticles\, and cat
alytic studies unravel their potential as light-enhanced catalysts.
\nInfo
