SUMMARY:Exploring possible universes of correlated topological insulators -
Greg Fiete (University of Texas at Austin)
DESCRIPTION:Greg Fiete\, Departement of Physics\,  University of Texas at
 Austin
\nabstract:
\nOver the past decade physics has experienced an infus
ion of ideas from a branch of mathematics known as topology.  Topology de
als with properties of objects that are invariant with respect to continuo
us shape or size changes.  When quantum systems possess topological aspec
ts\, they can exhibit an unusual robustness to systems imperfections and e
nvironmental perturbations. In this talk\, I will survey recent advances i
n our understanding of topological quantum many-particle systems and highl
ight what makes them unusual\, as well as how they can be experimentally d
etected and probed.  The talk will conclude with a status report on the f
rontier of our knowledge\, and what possible applications might arise from
  topological phases of matter.
\nPage web du prof. Fiete
\nCette confér
 ence s'adresse à tous\, y compris les professeurs\, les chercheurs et les
  étudiants des trois cycles.
\nLe café est servi à partir de 11h30.
