SUMMARY:Interpreting Sgr A*'s Most Luminous X-ray Flares - Daryl Haggard (M
 cGill University)
DESCRIPTION:Interpreting Sgr A*'s Most Luminous X-ray Flares - Daryl Haggar
 d (McGill University)
\nSagittarius A* is the closest example of a superma
 ssive black hole
\n(SMBH) buried within a dense\, massive stellar cluster
 . Sgr A* is more
\nthan 100 times closer than any other SMBH\, and our pr
 oximity allows us
\nto detect emission from its accretion flow in the rad
 io\, submillimeter
\n(submm)\, near infrared (NIR)\, and X-ray regimes. T
 hese rich
\nmultiwavelength\, time-resolved data have the power to probe
 the physical
\nprocesses that underlie rapid flares originating near the
 black hole's
\nevent horizon. During ambitious Chandra and VLA monitoring
  campaigns
\nover the last several years\, we have detected the brightest
 -ever X-ray
\nflares from Sgr A*. However\, despite years of observationa
 l and
\ntheoretical study\, we do not have a complete\, unique model to e
 xplain
\nthese high-energy flares\, or their relationship to variability
 at other
\nwavelengths. Viable models range from the tidal disruption of
 asteroids
\nto gravitational lensing to magnetic reconnection\, motivatin
 g observers
\nto place tighter constraints on the timing and multiwavelen
 gth
\nproperties of these outbursts. X-ray flares may also help us relate
  Sgr
\nA* to weakly accreting black holes across the mass spectrum. I wil
 l
\ndiscuss the possible origins and continuing mysteries surrounding Sgr

\nA*'s high-energy flares and give a brief update on the Sgr A*/G2
\nin
 teraction.
\n
\n
