Abstract: After giving a short introduction on the Shamakha As
 trophysical Observatory (ShAO) of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Scien
 ces and its equipment I will mainly concentrate on observational propertie
 s of close binary systems. Our many years of experience in this field will
  be exposed. Moreover\, information about our local group and possibility 
 for cooperation between ShAO and the Université de Montréal will be disc
 ussed. Complementary aspects of optical and satellite observations will al
 so be highlighted.
