 cinquante étoiles au grand sceau des États-Unis\, du fameux « Greenback
  »  à la bannière étoilée\, l’étoile comme symbole des états am
 éricains est des plus visibles\, et des moins explorés\, du langage publ
 ic Américain. La force de la métaphore a permis au drapeau étoilé de d
 evenir un véritable phénomène universel. L’utilisation de l’étoile
  comme symbole des états\, et l’image qui en découle\, des États-Unis
  comme constellation\, ont émergé dès les premiers jours de la Révolut
 ion américaine. Les racine de cette image remontent au langage de la mona
 rchie britannique du dix-septième et dix-huitième siècles. Le républic
 anisme de la Révolution a brisé cette association traditionnelle en inau
 gurant une cosmologie politique révolutionnaire : une constellation d’
 étoiles flottantes uniformes\, dépourvues d’un centre solaire\, qui in
 carne les valeurs républicaines. La Révolution américaine constitue don
 c un tournant dans l’utilisation du langage astronomique. Tout au long d
 u dix-neuvième siècle\, cet idiome de la « nouvelle constellation » a 
 été proéminent dans le discours public américain\, offrant aux Améric
 ains un nouveau vocable afin d’articuler leur position en transformation
  et leur compréhension de leur nouvelle République fédérale.----------

  2009 by the Université of Virginia Press. Abstract :The J.W. McConnell F
 amily Foundation Chair of American Studies at the Université de Montréal
  is delighted to announce a seminar by Eran Shalev\, at the University of 
 Haifa: “’A Republic Amidst the Stars’: Political Astronomy and the I
 ntellectual Origins of the Stars and Stripes.” From the fifty-star flag 
 to the Great Seal\, from Greenbacks to the Star Spangled Banner\, the star
 -as-American state\, and consequently the United States as a constellation
  of stars-states\, is arguably the most salient – and least explored –
  symbol in American public language. So potent is the metaphor\, star-span
 gled national banners have become a universal phenomenon. The configuratio
 n of the star-as-state\, and the consequent image of the United States as 
 a constellation\, emerged in the early days of the American Revolution\, w
 ith roots in a seventeenth and eighteenth-century monarchical discourse. T
 he republicanism of the Revolution shattered these associations\, inaugura
 ting an alternative and revolutionary political cosmology: a diffused cons
 tellation of uniform floating stars devoid of a solar center that embodied
  egalitarian and republican values. The American Revolution would thus pro
 ve a watershed for the deployment of astronomical political language. Thro
 ughout the nineteenth century\, this idiom of the 'new constellation' has 
 featured prominently in United States' public discourse\, providing Americ
 ans with a novel vocabulary to articulate their shifting attitudes toward\
 , and understanding of their federal republic.
