SUMMARY:Interplay between spin-orbit coupling and electronic correlation\;
 Spin-orbit Mott insulator in Iridates – Hae-Young Kee\, UToronto
DESCRIPTION:Hae-Young Kee\, Professor of Physics & Senior Fellow of Canadi
 an Institute for Advanced Research\, Department of Physics\, University
 of Toronto\, Toronto\, ON CANADASpin-orbit coupling (SOC) is often either
  ignored or treated perturbatively in correlated electronic materials wh
 ere 3d or 4d-orbitals are active. However\, in materials with heavier ato
 ms\, SOC plays an important role in determining the ground state and often
  helps stabilize novel phases such as topological insulators\, spin liqu
 ids\, and novel magnetic states. In particular\, the interplay between SO
 C and electronic interactions needs to be understood when these energy s
 cales are comparable. Iridium oxides (iridates) with 5d-orbitals off er a
 playground to investigate their combined effects. In this talk\, I will g
 ive a summary of recent theoretical and experimental developments on irida
 tes\, and then present a microscopic route to metal-insulator transition
 and magnetic properties observed in a series of layered perovskite iridate
