SUMMARY:Polariton Condensates – David Snoke\, Physics Departement\, Unive
 rsity of Pittsburg
DESCRIPTION:David Snoke\, Physics Departement\, University of PittsburgPola
ritons are short-lifetime\, quasi-number conserved particles with very lig
ht effective mass (four orders of magnitude less than an electron) which e
xist inside specially designed nanostructured solids. During their existen
ce\, they act to a very good approximation as a weakly interacting Bose ga
s\, and undergo Bose-Einstein condensation. In the past five years there h
as been an explosion of new experiments on polariton condensates\, includi
ng Josephson junction oscillations between two condensates\, imaging of pi
nned vortices\, measurement of the onset time for coherence\, soliton-like
motion of a polariton superfluid over long distances\, and measurement of
the momentum distribution and spatial distribution in a harmonic trap. Th
is talk will be partly review of recent work by others\, and partly focus
on our recent work in Pittsburgh on polaritons with long lifetime compared
to their thermalization time.
