SUMMARY:Anton Burkov\, Department of Physics and Astronomy\, University of
 Waterloo
DESCRIPTION:Dirac MaterialsDuring the last decade there has been an explosi
on of work on the so-called Dirac materials: solid crystalline materials w
ith the electronic structure near the Fermi surface resembling the energy
dispersion of relativistic Dirac fermions. These include graphene\, topolo
gical insulators and superconductors\, and Weyl semimetals.   Such materi
als are interesting both as a potential source of new technological applic
ations and from the fundamental physics standpoint.  This is because thei
r physics is to a large extent determined by topological properties of the
electronic structure\, which represents a departure from the standard par
adigm of symmetry (which is a geometrical rather than topological concept)
playing a fundamental role in physics. I will present a broad overview of
some of the recent work on Dirac materials\, including my own work on Wey
l semimetals\, emphasizing the role of topology in their observable physic
al properties.     Site web du groupe du Prof. Burkov.Cette conférence
  s'adresse à tous\, y compris les professeurs\, les chercheurs et les ét
udiants des trois cycles.Le café est servi à partir de 11h20.
