SUMMARY:Islamic unity in the age of ecumenism: Interpreting the importance
 of the World Muslim Congress
DESCRIPTION:Conférence publique organisée par la Chaire de recherche du C
anada Islam\, Pluralisme et Globalisation de l'Université de Montréal.In
vité : Gavin Brockett (Wilfred Laurier University) RésuméThe years foll
owing World War II witnessed concerted efforts to preserve international p
eace through the establishment of various transnational political\, econom
ic and religious organizations. Among these was the World Muslim Congress\
, formed in 1949 in Pakistan but influential throughout Africa\, Asia and
even Europe. Although many similar organizations exist today\, the World M
uslim Congress was the first to promote 'international Islam' and to empha
size that despite the rise of secular nationalism\, religion remained an i
mportant factor. The challenge is to interpret the significance of interna
tional Islam over the past sixty years and to understand its relationship
to the Islamism with which we are more familiar today.Notice biographique
