SUMMARY:Type Ia Supernova Progenitors: Ripple in Still Water - Carles Baden
 es
DESCRIPTION:Carles Badenes\, Université of PittsburghRésumé/abstract:Des
pite years of continuing efforts\, the nature of the progenitors of Type I
a Supernovae remains obscure. I will review the state of the art in this f
ield\, and highlight some recent observational advances that might be hint
ing - finally! - at a solution. In particular\, I will describe how new da
ta mining techniques applied to the spectroscopic data base from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey have allowed us to measure the merging rate of binary
White Dwarfs in the Milky Way. This rate happens to be very close to the T
ype Ia supernova rate in SBc spirals.Cette conférence est présentée par
le groupe astronomie et astrophysique du Département de physique de l'U
 niversité de Montréal.
