The St. Lawrence Estuary in a Glass – Code Beluga

Can a simple glass of water reveal the rich biodiversity of the St. Lawrence Estuary? In this family activity inspired by the Beluga Code project, you'll discover how fragments of DNA can uncover nature's hidden secrets.

A Family Discovery About the Beluga and the St. Lawrence

Visit the laboratory of the Franklin-51 underwater research station at the Biodôme. Nestled between the Laurentian Maple Forest and the Gulf of St. Lawrence ecosystems, this lab offers a unique opportunity to explore science as a family.

Through a five-minute, hands-on science demonstration, see what environmental DNA in water samples reveals about the species living in the St. Lawrence Estuary.
Explore the trophic network, the beluga’s complex food web, and learn about the challenges facing marine ecosystems in this part of the river.

You'll also discover the Beluga Code, a participatory science project whose findings help guide conservation efforts to better protect the river and its ecosystems.
