SUMMARY:Conférence : Radiative heat transfer in the optical near-field: ne
w opportunities for energy generation and heat flow control
DESCRIPTION:La conférence se déroulera en anglais seulement.Entrée libre
Bienvenue à tous !__________________Raphael St-Gelais (Cornell Nanophoton
ics Group) Radiative heat transfer between objects separated by subwavele
ngth distances offers unprecedented opportunities for energy generation an
d heat flow control applications. In the optical near-field\, heat transfe
r can occur through evanescent coupling of thermally excited infrared surf
ace resonances (i.e.\, plasmonic or phononic surface resonances). This hea
t transport mechanism can overcome the classical far-field radiation limit
(i.e.\, Stefan-Boltzmann law) by several orders of magnitude\, while occu
rring over a quasi-monochromatic frequency range. These unique characteris
tics could enable new exciting applications\, such as near-field thermopho
tovolatic energy generation\, or active heat flow control devices such as
thermal rectifiers and thermal transistors. I will review these prospectiv
e applications and present our recent work [1]\, in which we achieved the
first experimental demonstration of near-field radiative heat transfer bet
ween integrated nanostructures. [1] Demonstration of Strong Near-Field Ra
