Ceci est la première édition de la Série des conférences distinguées du Département de génie informatique et génie logiciel de Polytechnique Montréal, une nouvelle série d'événements qui vise à offrir à la communauté de Polytechnique une plateforme d'échange avec des experts de renommée internationale du génie informatique et du génie logiciel, sur des sujets importants du domaine des technologies de l'information.
Titre : Accélérer le développement de logiciels en reliant recherche et pratique (Accelerating Software Development by Connecting Research and Practice)

Résumé : Continuity in software development is all about shortening cycle times. For example, continuous integration shortens the time to integrate changes from multiple developers and continuous delivery shortens the time to get those integrated changes into the hands of users. Although it is now possible to get multiple new versions of complex software systems released per day, it still often takes years, if ever, to get software engineering research results into use by software development teams. What would software development look like if we could shorten the cycle time from taking a research result into practice? What would software engineering research look like if we could shorten the cycle time from taking advances in software development back into academia? In this talk, I will explore these questions, drawing from experiences I have gained in helping to take a research idea to market and from insights learned from interviewing industry leaders.
Biographie : Dr. Gail Murphy is UBC’s Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI). Prior to her appointment in Aug 2017, Dr. Murphy served as the Associate Vice-President, Research pro tem at UBC. She was involved in the strategy and operations of the Research Excellence Cluster initiative; strengthened UBC’s involvement with Microsoft; helped found the Cascadia Urban Analytics Consortium (a joint initiative with the University of Washington); and improved research infrastructure in the areas of Advanced Research Computing and Sequencing and Bioinformatics. Dr. Murphy is a Professor in UBC’s Department of Computer Science and was formerly Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Studies) in the Faculty of Science. After completing her B.Sc. at the University of Alberta in 1987, she worked for five years as a software engineer in the Lower Mainland. She later pursued graduate studies in computer science at the University of Washington, earning first an M.Sc. (1994) and then a Ph.D (1996). Dr. Murphy joined UBC in 1996 and was a key driver of the recent Masters of Data Science, a professional graduate program launching Fall 18, and has been instrumental in championing the creation of a Data Science Institute at the university. She also maintains an active research group with post-doctoral and graduate students. Dr. Murphy’s research focuses on improving the productivity of software developers and knowledge workers by providing the necessary tools to identify, manage and coordinate the information that matters most for their work. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Distinguished Scientist, as well as co-founder, board member and former Chief Scientist at Tasktop Technologies Incorporated.
